This is the button everybody pictures: a pressed steel shell, your artwork litho printed on paper, a clear protective film over the face, and a safety-pin back crimped into the rim. It is the format that has decorated campaigns for a century, and it still works because it is cheap, it is instantly readable, and people keep them.

The part nobody explains is the wrap. The printed circle is larger than the shell, because the paper has to fold over the dome and tuck under the crimped rim. On a 2.25 in button that swallows roughly a quarter inch off the printed diameter, which is why so many buttons arrive with the last letter of a surname curling over the edge where it cannot be read.

So we quote four numbers instead of one: the shell size, the printed diameter, the bleed and the live area. The mockup draws the live-area ring over your artwork, so you can see before you approve exactly what a person standing in front of the button will read. Nothing important is ever set outside that ring.
